Definitely wouldn’t recommend this museum to anyone with sensitive hearing or misophonia. The main feature of the museum are the sound-producing installations. Although they all can only be activated in shorter or longer intervals, they can be rather unexpected and harsh.
Tinguely’s works are nicely exhibited and given much space, allowing the sound to travel. Unfortunately, that made the videos played in other rooms barely audible.
The room exhibiting Mengele-Totentanz was the most mesmerising. Its location is great, considering that the historical Totentanz fresco in Basel left quite a mark on the city’s culture. The anti-chamber to the Totentanz held a display on the crisis of democracy, which was hard to appreciate. It was defeatist to the point of being anti-democratic. Especially the documentary from 2009 attacking Polish democratic institutions and posing a statement that only socialism can work as a system in Poland left bad taste in my mouth. Temporary exhibition was also rather weak.
This is a must see place in Basel. It is a fascinating place where there are several large scale Tinguely creations on display. The machines are operated on a timer and if you are patient you can see each of them operating in turn. Wheels revolve, gears engage, hammers fall, drums are hit, a cacophony of sound emerges. Smaller Tinguely creations are on display including his automatons for creating art. There are a number of video installations where you get to hear from his collaborators and colleagues. There are also several sculptures by his second wife Niki de Saint Phalle. Well worth a visit. And a great gift shop.
