Biennale of Sydney

The Biennale of Sydney is Australia's oldest and most significant large-scale international contemporary art event, founded in 1973. Held across multiple iconic venues — from the Museum of Contemporary Art to Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour — it transforms the city into a living laboratory for global contemporary art.

Unknown City

Each edition brings together artists from across the world to engage with a thematic proposition relevant to the present moment. The Biennale has long been a platform for artists from the Pacific, Southeast Asia, and the Global South, giving it a perspective that complements and challenges the dominant art world narratives of Europe and North America.

Sydney in autumn (March to June) is at its most beautiful — warm, clear days and the harbour shimmering with light. The Biennale spreads across the city, inviting audiences to experience contemporary art in some of the world's most spectacular settings.

City Guides

Sydney's cultural landscape is extraordinary: the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia overlooks Circular Quay, the Art Gallery of New South Wales spans centuries of collection, and the White Rabbit Gallery specialises in 21st-century Chinese art. Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO-listed former convict settlement in the middle of Sydney Harbour, hosts major Biennale installations.
