Havana Biennial

The Havana Biennial is one of the most historically significant exhibitions in the Global South, founded in 1984 by the Centro Wifredo Lam. It was the first major biennial to deliberately centre artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia at a time when the Western art world offered little space for such voices — a founding act of curatorial decolonisation.

Unknown City

Held across Havana's extraordinary collection of colonial architecture, modernist monuments, and found spaces, the Biennial transforms the city into a sprawling exhibition. Despite the economic challenges facing Cuba, it remains a deeply vital event — a testament to the power of cultural commitment under constraint.

Havana is one of the most cinematically beautiful cities in the world — its crumbling grandeur, vibrant street life, extraordinary music culture, and the warmth of its people make every visit an intense and unforgettable experience. The Biennial adds a layer of international contemporary art to this already overwhelming sensory landscape.

City Guides

Havana rewards extended exploration: the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes holds one of the finest collections of Cuban art anywhere. The Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC) has become one of the most exciting multidisciplinary cultural spaces in Latin America. Old Havana's Baroque cathedrals and the Malecón seafront at sunset are essential experiences.
