Carnegie International

The Carnegie International is the oldest international survey of contemporary art in the United States, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1896. Held at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, it predates the Venice Biennale and remains one of the most significant recurring exhibitions in the world, presenting commissioned and surveyed works by leading global artists.

Unlike commercially oriented biennials, the Carnegie International is entirely museum-based, commissioning major new works and acquiring pieces for the permanent collection. Each edition features around 35 artists whose work is shown in full dialogue with the Carnegie's outstanding permanent collection — from Old Masters to the present day.

Pittsburgh is itself a revelation for first-time visitors — a post-industrial city reinvented as a centre of creative and technological innovation, with one of the most beautiful natural settings of any American city at the confluence of three rivers.

City Guides

The Carnegie Museums campus in Oakland includes the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History under one roof — an extraordinary combination that embodies Andrew Carnegie's vision of universal education. Pittsburgh's broader cultural offerings include the Warhol Museum (the most comprehensive single-artist museum in the world) and the Mattress Factory.
