Shanghai Biennale

The Shanghai Biennale is China's most important international contemporary art exhibition, held at the Power Station of Art — a magnificent converted power station on the Huangpu River. Founded in 1996, it is one of the longest-running biennials in Asia and a crucial lens through which to understand the extraordinary dynamism of contemporary Chinese and global art.

Unknown City

Each edition invites an international curatorial team to develop a thematic programme that brings together Chinese and global artists in genuine dialogue. The Power Station of Art — China's first state-run contemporary art museum — provides a spectacular industrial setting of over 40,000 square metres for major commissions and presentations.

Shanghai in November and December is at its most vibrant — the intense summer heat has lifted, and the city's galleries, restaurants, and cultural institutions are in full swing. The Biennale is the anchor event of Shanghai Art Week, which draws collectors and curators from across Asia and beyond.

City Guides

Shanghai is one of the world's great cities for contemporary art. Beyond the Power Station, the West Bund cultural corridor has transformed former industrial land into a string of world-class museums. The Long Museum, Yuz Museum, and Tank Shanghai are all within the same riverside district. The Bund's colonial architecture and the Pudong skyline remain unmissable.
